Environmental organizations across the world raised serious concerns today over the increasing dangers faced by climate activists, warning that environmental defenders are becoming one of the most threatened groups globally. According to reports released by international watchdogs and human rights groups, activists advocating for environmental protection are facing rising levels of intimidation, harassment, arrests, and violence.
Global environmental networks stated that climate activists working to protect forests, land rights, water resources, and indigenous territories are often targeted by powerful political and corporate interests. In several countries across Latin America, Africa, and Asia, activists have reportedly been attacked, detained, or silenced for opposing mining projects, deforestation, and large-scale infrastructure developments.
Human rights organizations emphasized that many governments are failing to provide adequate legal protection to environmental defenders. Instead, activists are increasingly being criminalized through restrictive laws, surveillance, and legal action aimed at suppressing protests and public dissent.
Environmental groups also highlighted that women activists and indigenous leaders face even higher risks, including gender-based violence and forced displacement.
