Nepal Records Strong Trade Growth, but Widening Deficit Raises Concerns

Kathmandu, December 26, 2025 — Nepal has recorded robust growth in foreign trade, with overall trade volume rising by more than 20 percent in recent months, driven largely by a sharp increase in exports. However, despite the positive momentum, the country’s trade deficit continues to widen, highlighting ongoing structural challenges in the economy.

According to official data, Nepal’s exports have surged significantly due to improved performance in key sectors such as manufactured goods, agricultural products, and energy-related exports, reflecting growing regional demand and improved trade facilitation. The increase marks one of the strongest export performances in recent years.

At the same time, imports have continued to rise at a faster pace, fueled by strong domestic demand for fuel, machinery, consumer goods, and raw materials. As a result, the trade deficit — a long-standing concern for the Himalayan nation — has expanded despite export gains.

Economists note that while export growth is a positive sign of improving production capacity, Nepal’s heavy reliance on imports remains a major vulnerability. “Sustained export diversification and domestic industrial expansion are essential to narrow the trade gap,” analysts said.

The government has introduced several measures aimed at promoting exports, including incentives for domestic producers, trade infrastructure development, and market access initiatives. However, experts warn that without long-term reforms focused on productivity, value addition, and import substitution, trade imbalances may persist.

Nepal’s trade performance is closely watched due to its impact on foreign exchange reserves, currency stability, and overall economic growth. As global economic conditions remain uncertain, policymakers face increasing pressure to convert export momentum into sustainable economic resilience.
