KIST Medical College and Teaching Hospital has become Nepal’s first medical college and teaching hospital to receive accreditation for delivering healthcare services that meet international quality standards.
This recognition was awarded by India’s National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) on April 24, 2025, after extensive monitoring and evaluation. The hospital met more than 600 prescribed standards set by the board to qualify for this accreditation.
With this achievement, the hospital is now required to consistently uphold the international standards set by the accrediting body. According to COO Mr Amish Pathak, the hospital has become more committed to enhancing patient care, and the accreditation has created an environment of greater trust among service recipients. He added that the opportunity for all types of patients to receive internationally certified healthcare services has increased the hospital’s sense of responsibility and is expected to further strengthen public trust in the institution.
What is the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH)?
NABH is an organization that evaluates the quality of healthcare providers both within and outside India. It launched its hospital accreditation program in 2006 with the objective of improving the quality of healthcare services and ensuring patient safety in both public and private hospitals.
This program has since expanded internationally and is certified by the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua). To achieve NABH accreditation, hospitals must demonstrate continuous improvement in healthcare delivery, with a strong focus on patient safety and service quality. They are also required to comply with standards concerning infrastructure, equipment, and other critical areas.
To be accredited by NABH, a hospital must undergo assessment against over 600 internationally recognized standards. These cover a wide range of areas including patient safety, infection control, patients’ rights, staff training, document management, and emergency preparedness. Hospitals that fail to meet these standards are not granted accreditation. KIST Hospital underwent a rigorous internal improvement process over more than two years to earn this recognition.
Established in 2006 AD (B.S. 2062) and located in Gwarko, Lalitpur, KIST Hospital is a modern multi-specialty hospital. It provides a range of services from general care to highly specialized treatments. In recent years, it has made significant advancements in kidney and liver transplantation, as well as in the treatment of cardiac and cancer-related conditions.
KIST Hospital is also the first in Nepal to successfully perform both a liver and a kidney transplant on the same patient.
